Radon

What is Radon?

Radon is a naturally occurring gas that is radioactive gas that occurs naturally in soil, rock, and water. I can seep into buildings through cracks in floors, walls, and foundations.  Long-term exposure to high levels of radon can increase the risk of lung cancer. Radon is common in Wisconsin and about 1 out of 10 homes have high radon levels.

How do I know If I'm at risk?

Testing your home is the only way to know if you and your family are at risk for radon. Testing is an important first step to know your home's radon level.

Where do I get a test?

Testing is simple! Crawford County residents can pick up a FREE test at the Crawford County Health Department or Gays Mills Community Center between November-February.

How does radon tests work?

Our short-term radon tests kits include a container filled with activated Charcoal that absorbs the radon gas in the air. After the 48 hour testing period, the container is resealed and returned for processing.

What do I do if my home tests high?

If your home has radon levels of four picocuries per Liter (4 pCi/L) or higher it should be fixed. A contractor can fix it. Check out the certified radon mitigation contractors listing.
