If you’ve walked down the aisles of Walmart in recent months, you’ve undoubtedly noticed the overall increase in prices. And if you check out the aisles of deodorant, body wash, shampoo and toothpaste, you see that many things have nearly doubled in price. For some people, this is a nuisance. They are simply annoyed that the cost of things keeps going higher and higher. For others, they need to make a choice – do they cut back on groceries this week to have enough to buy what they need? Can they use a little less shampoo until next payday? Do they have the extra money to buy two deodorants, one for at home and an extra for the locker room?
OUR MISSION:
We believe that every student in Crawford county has the right to feel good about themselves on the inside and on the outside. Poor hygiene affects self esteem and mental wellness. We want to ensure that each student has access to keep them healthy and well, regardless of the cost of items. As a result, we are helping schools start and maintain Hygiene Closets.
What is a Hygiene Closet?
A Hygiene Closet is located in schools and provides youth with new and unused hygiene products/toiletries throughout the year. Kids have access to the things that they need. We rely on community donations (hygiene items or monetary donations) through donation drives to fill and maintain these closets.
Why do schools in Crawford County need a hygiene closet?
Good hygiene is about keeping your body clean, which can also keep you from getting infections like stomach bugs, colds and flu. As an end result - less missed school days! Also, according to a 2023 State of the Period Survey, 1/3 of teens have reported missing school due to a lack of access to menstrual hygiene products. Allowing these teens access to free hygiene products at school can ensure that those who cannot afford them are able to stay in school.
Kids change rapidly during the school age years. They are growing and changing physically and emotionally. Some kids take longer to get the hang of showering more often, using deodorant on a regular basis or changing clothes after PE class or working out. We teach them about the importance of good hygiene in the classroom over these years, but we’d also like to help provide them with the hygiene products they need and may not have access to.
We also believe that it’s important to provide these toiletries without stigma to kids who may need them. Hygiene closets are discreet and other students don’t have to know who is utilizing them. Some students might use them once or twice a year, and others might use them weekly. All are welcome to take what they need.
