What is the NARCAN® Direct Program?

The NARCAN® Direct Program through the Wisconsin Department of Health and Human Services that provides free NARCAN® for community distribution, and is available at the Crawford County Health Department.

What is NARCAN®?

NARCAN®, or naloxone, is a lifesaving medication used to rapidly reverse opioid overdose. It binds to opioid receptors in the brain, counteracting the effects of opioids and restoring normal respiration. This product is administered as a nasal spray in emergency situations. 

Who is authorized to administer Narcan®?

Anyone can use or give NARCAN®. 

Does NARCAN®  work on alcohol or other non-opioid overdose?

No, NARCAN® only works to reverse opioid medications.

What is Fentanyl?

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid pain reliever that is much more potent than other opioids like morphine or heroin. Due to its potency, fentanyl can be particularly dangerous and can be found in any illicit drugs. 

What are Fentanyl test strips?

Fentanyl test strips are a tool used to detect the presence of fentanyl in a substance, such as drugs. These strips provide a quick and simple way to check for the presence of fentanyl, offering harm reduction by allowing individuals to assess the safety of the substance before use, helping reduce the risk of accidental overdose. 

Fentanyl Drug Tests are available at the Crawford County Health Department. 

What do I do with unused/unwanted medications?

The Crawford County Sheriff's Office, Prairie du Chien City Hall, and Village of Gays Mills are collection sites for unused or unwanted medications. The drop-off box is located to the left of the Dispatch window at 224 N Beaumont Rd Prairie du Chien, WI, 53821, in the lobby of City Hall 214 E. Blackhawk Ave Prairie du Chien, WI 53821, and lobby of Village of Gays Mills 16381 WI-131, Gays Mills, WI 54631. Medications can be dropped off anytime, free of charge, and no questions asked. They do not accept needles, inhalers, biohazard or household materials, mercury, or personal care products.

Can I or my organization receive training on how to use NARCAN®? 

Yes, Presentations are available upon request. NARCAN® training prepares community members with the knowledge and skills to recognize opioid overdoses and safely administer Narcan, a life-saving medication that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.
